Product Guide
iPhone 7 is here! Are the rumours true?
Please note: AirPods 2 (2019) have now been released and are available to order.

The buzz surrounding Apple’s latest mobile release is bigger than ever. Is the headphone jack really gone? Is the phone waterproof? Who should upgrade? In short, iPhone 7 is much the same as its predecessor, but the few differences are groundbreaking!

iPhone 7: Will I see a difference?
No, not at first glance. iPhone 7 features the same premium design as the iPhone 6S– and the iPhone 6. Apple has stuck to its winning formula by crafting an ultra-slim, round-cornered device of 7000 series aluminium alloy. The full metal chassis housing the now familiar 4.7 inch glossy screen is as eye-catching as ever. But nuances point to a far more advanced device.

Gone are the rear antennae lines, which are now discreetly placed top and bottom, lending the device an unbroken, harmonious appearance.
Colour options have also changed. Space grey has been abandoned in favour of two shades of black: glossy jet black and matte black. Silver, gold and the beloved rose gold remain on offer.
And it’s true, iPhone 7 is water resistant. Boasting an IP67 rating against dust and splash, it can withstand a dunk in the pool or a soak in the shower. This latest member to join the ranks of waterproof smartphones, is not swim-proof, however. Don’t think you’re dealing with a Sony phone. Apple also expressly excludes any form of water damage from its guarantee.
Force Touch with Taptic Engine
Though you might not see an immediate difference, you’ll feel one. The iPhone 7 features Apple’s Force Touch technology. In practical terms, this means: the home button is not a true button. You won’t feel any give when you press it. To keep users from freaking out, Apple has kindly installed a vibration motor, which it dubs the “taptic engine”. The button vibrates when you press it. The fingerprint scanner is still in place, though it works differently now.

Same Screen, Same Resolution
No upgrade in resolution. The iPhone 7 retains the same 1,334 x 750 pixel display — an honest disappointment for fans of the Samsung Galaxy S7’s quad-HD screen. Yes, you will notice a lack of sharpness on Apple’s screen when compared directly to that of its biggest rival. In all other regards, the LCD display is striking, delivering excellent colour reproduction and the “floating” appearance that makes it stand out despite the dearth of pixels.

No Headphone Jack
Goodbye headphone jack. Apple has boldly removed the conventional 3.5 mm port. If you don’t go wireless, the lightning connector is your music attachment. Don’t panic yet. The included earpods are kitted out with the proper connection. You also get a free adaptor for use with your old cans. Shell out a bit extra, and you can purchase the Airpods, which connect wirelessly via Apple’s own new standard. Why has Apple done this? Well it saves space and the lightning port can also carry more data to your ears, which may be of significance in the not too distant future.

In other music news, stereo sound is also part of the programme. The dual speakers are located at the top and bottom of the phone, and the boost in effect is quite noticeable.

A10 processor with iOS 10
Performance is up to Apple standards and smoother than ever. The phone reacts instantly to every tap and swipe. The new quicker A10 fusion chip is a 64-bit quad-core processor, and Apple claims that it offers 40% more speed. Two cores are responsible for performance and two for efficiency. This boosts battery life — according to Apple, you can expect an extra hour under average daily use when compared to the iPhone 6S.

Gaming capability, a traditional weak point of iPhones, is also much improved thanks to these upgrades. Just remember that the screen is not Full-HD. You also get iOS 10 — headline feature, raise to wake. Just pick up the phone to view notifications.

More Storage
Apple has finally accepted that 16 GB storage is not enough. The entry-level iPhone 7 packs 32 GB. But since the 64 GB option has also been ditched, it’s a big jump up to 128 GB — both price and storage wise. A 256 GB option has also been added for very heavy (and wealthy) users, eliminating any chance of running out of space.

Camera: Apple Improves
The iPhone 7 keeps the same 12 MP main camera, but a host of upgrades make it better. Optical image stabilisation is available for the first time on the non-Plus version, and the lens features a wider aperture for enhanced low-light shooting. (Yes, this increases the size of the lens bump on the rear of the phone — wobble away.)

What’s more, the new A10 Fusion chip houses an image signal processor. Via deep machine learning and a repertoire of more than 100 billion operations, it optimises focus and white balance almost instantaneously. The flash, renamed Quad-LED True Tone, is brighter than ever. It can even counteract the flicker-effect of artificial lighting and adjust to the surrounding colour temperature. The result of these upgrades: a noticeably wider colour gamut and improved contrast, which means that the iPhone’s camera is better than ever before.

The front “selfie” camera has undergone an upgrade, too, now boasting 7 MP. Combined with the Retina Flash, which was introduced on the 6S, it delivers excellent shots.

The Bottom Line
iPhone 7 is faster, packs a better camera, and offers more storage and colour options. But despite the improvements on offer, we see no need for iPhone 6 or 6S users to upgrade — a black, water-resistant chassis doesn’t justify the outlay. The Taptic Engine and lack of a headphone jack might even be considered irritations by some, while improvements in camera and processor, though real, are more like bonuses. The 6 and 6S are already excellent phones in both regards.

If you’re waffling between the standard 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, keep in mind that the phablet offers the following benefits.

5.5 inch display
Full-HD resolution
Dual Main Camera
3 GB RAM
But it’s also quite a handful and costs significantly more. Plus or no Plus, you won’t find a cheap iPhone 7 yet.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Product Guide
Huawei have reached the top. In the words of Pocket-lint, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro “outshines the Galaxy S9” (24/10/2018). This amazing piece of tech is Huawei’s best phone to date and worthy to stand proud amongst 2018’s top flagship phones. Highlights include a 6.39 inch display, a massive 4200 mAH battery with support for wireless charging, and a triple rear camera with telephoto and ultra wide angle lenses.

Mate 20 Pro: Highlights
Crafted from glass and aluminium, the Mate 20 Pro measures 156.9 x 72.4 x 8.6 mm and weighs 189 g. The entire front of the phone is covered by a 6.39 inch curved OLED display in widescreen 19.5: 9 format. This offers a huge amount of screen space as well as contrast-rich colours and plenty of brightness for use in direct sunlight. The Quad-HD resolution (3120 x 1440), which yields a pixel density of 538 ppi, provides a sharp, clear viewing experience.

Other key features include:

Waterproof Build: IP 68 dust and waterproof, the phone can withstand immersion in up to 2 m water for 30 mintues.
Security: The phone is equipped with facial recognition and an in-display fingerprint sensor.
No Headphone Jack: The 3.5mm headphone jack has been eliminated. An adapter is included in the box.
Processor: The HiSilicon 980 octa core processor (built to rival the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845) is clocked at 2.6 GHz and backed by 6 GB RAM for blazing performance.
GPU Turbo Unlock: This Huawei feature boosts graphics for certain games.
Operating System: The phone comes running Android 9.0 Pie with the EMUI 9.0 user interface. EMUI offers the option of using two forms of the same app (WhatsApp, Facebook), one for each SIM card.
The phone comes with 128 GB internal storage, which can be expanded — not through a conventional microSD card but instead via Huawei’s own NM card. The brand developed nano storage (45% smaller than microSD) so that the card could fit in the second nano-SIM slot of the phone.

Major highlight of the Mate 20 Pro is the massive 4200 mAH battery for 24 hours of power. In addition to the standard energy-saving modes, it supports fast charging via SuperCharge, filling up to 70% in 3 minutes. It also supports wireless charging via the Qi standard with the additional capabilitiy of allowing other other Qi devices to tap into its own battery power. This means that you could potentially charge up your friend’s ailing iPhone or give your wireless buds a boost.

Triple Rear Camera
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has one of the best phone cameras on earth.

Back Cameras: 40 MP (wide angle), 20 MP (ultra wide angle), 8 MP (telephoto)
Front Camera: 24 MP
Co-engineered by Leica, the triple back camera offers 3 different focal lengths. The 40 MP wide angle is the default choice. The 20 MP ultra wide lens is suitable for broader shots or super macro mode. The 8 MP telephoto lens enables 3x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom with cropping.

The cameras are supported by AI-assisted shooting, which recognises typical scenarios and adjusts settings according. The Portrait Mode offers software-adjusted lighting and aperture options for bokeh effects as well as a selection of filters. Best of all is Night Mode. By burst shooting images with a variety of exposures, it creates exceptional HDR pictures — likely the best currently possible on a phone.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro: UK Price
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is available in black, twilight or midnight blue for prices starting at around £850. Other top options this year include the Google Pixel 3, the OnePlus 6T, the Samsung Galaxy S9, and Huawei’s own P20 Pro.

Product Guide
The stylish analogue Michael Kors Parker ladies chronograph quartz watch is a great present for a loved one. The round watch features a bezel encrusted with crystals, which add a touch of glamour to any outfit. It has one numeral at the top, the rest of the hours are marked with crystals.

A few useful features complement the model, such as glow in the dark watch hands. There is also a separate window that displays the date. Due to it being water resistant up to 10 ATM (100 m), you won’t have to remember to take it off when you go swimming, for example.

The three sub-dials make up the chronograph feature of this watch. They can all be manually set with ease by using the corresponding buttons on the side; the right sub dial counts 24 hours, the left dial 30 minutes and the bottom 60 seconds. Combined, these come in handy for a wide range of sporting activities.

Thanks to the sturdy properties of the mineral glass and stainless steel case, the watch can take some knocks, allowing you to wear it on a day to day basis. There are a few variations to choose from, some have a leather strap with a pin buckle closure whilst other straps are made out of stainless steel and have a fold over clasp.

Same Screen, Same Resolution

Yes, you will notice a lack of sharpness on Apple’s screen when compared directly to that of its biggest rival.

Michael Kors Parker Chrono

Apple iPhone 7

Michael Kors Parker Chrono
