Nintendo Switch

Let’s be honest – this is the big UK console release of 2017. This is the legendary Japanese manufacturer’s follow up to the slightly disappointing Wii U, which did not live up to its promise and so did not catch the imagination of the gaming public in the same vein as its predecessors. And so we come to the Nintendo Switch, which, rather than a continuation of that line is more of a console-handheld hybrid, perhaps closer in spirit to the extremely successful 3DS. Boasting a wide amount of different varieties of tech, a lot of which are not yet full taken advantage of by developers, one of the beauties is that the console is extremely portable and independent, capable of 6 hours battery life, and easily rechargeable with a USB cable – a huge step forward in gaming.

Nintendo Switch Design
The actual “Switch” itself, is the screen on which games can be played. It measures 6.2 inches and could be a little bigger, but is a healthy weight – not too much, not too little. This screen has a resolution of 720 p (so not 900 or 1080 p or “full” HD), but that’s not really so much of an issue when what is being delivered instead is near-flawless framerate and resulting gameplay.

The transition to connecting the Nintendo Switch to a bigger screen such as an LED TV is seamless, and you don’t have to worry about getting killed or driving off a cliff or losing progress, as it pauses automatically for you to confirm with the Joy-Con controller.

Controllers
The beautifully designed Joy-Con portable game-pads are a fantastic feat of engineering, taking the place of both regular controller and motion controller. Make no mistake – these are incredibly small devices when split up, even smaller than a smartphone in your hands, but not so much that they are irritating to use. Compared to the Xbox One controller or the Sony DualShock 4 it can feel quite odd initially, but you will quickly get used to them. The pads simply slide onto either side of the screen to create the handheld, or into their docking pad, otherwise you can use each independently as individual controllers, essentially enabling multiplayer play from the one controller.

They also possess a new feature, dubbed by Nintendo HD rumble. This is a great way of showing how far rumble pads in controllers have come from simple straightforward shocks and bangs (for example when you strike the post in FIFA 17) to really adding to the immersive experience of gaming. You can pick them up in understated grey, or jazz it up a little with red and neon blue shades. There is also a Pro Controller for more “serious” games, which fits snugly into the hands. Both types of Nintendo Switch controller fall into the same general price range when purchased separately.

So How Does It Compare?
While never really being able to compete with the huge, high-powered 4K consoles of the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One S, the Nintendo Switch excels if you consider it in terms of as a powerful handheld console. Worlds away from the Nintendo DS lite or Game Boy Advance SP, it might just be the ideal travel companion for a rainy holiday, or for visiting friends. Its portability is a major asset, allowing you to play titles on long bus or train journeys, particularly if there is a USB charging point, as there are on many these days, as public transport finally enters the 21st century.

8 consoles can join the same network, giving you the potential for a lot of multiplayer fun. Fascinatingly, it seems like the mystery and adaptability of the Nintendo Switch means that it, and us gamers, still have yet to decide what its best use and rightful place is in the digital universe.

Games Selection
Although underwhelming at launch, there is a gradually expanding range of Nintendo Switch games, filled with classic series such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8, Super Bomberman R, Pokemon, and FIFA. What is really cool is that the console will happily run large, open world console games such as Skyrim, for example, a game more typically seen on the larger, hefty consoles.

Price Information
Initially on its release, the price point of the console was dispiritedly high, considering the competition in the market. However that is beginning to drop, and by comparing the Nintendo Switch online across sellers you can buy it for the cheapest price. Expect a considerable price drop in late 2017, where the range of games will also be bolstered significantly. As always, keep an eye out for bundles, which can offer great value and are an incredibly useful starter set.

You may also be interested in picking up an officially licensed SanDisk microSDXC card for your console to boost storage capacity by up to another 128GB.

Product Guide
Adding an extra dimension to your play
A long time coming, the PlayStation Move Motion Controller Twin Pack is an excellent upgrade to the gaming experience, going forward, and the second controller only doubles the fun! It is important to note that in order to utilise these you must have the PlayStation Camera for the PS4 or PS4 Pro. The advantage of playing with the PS4’s Camera is the extra depth it grants the holder of the remote. It is part of Sony’s response to the Nintendo Wii’s remote and Microsoft Xbox 360 and One’s Kinect controller.

PlayStation Move Motion Controllers
These wand controllers are quite distinctive, with a glowing ball attached to the top of them. While they may resemble something else, these globes light up in a wide variety of colours based on the user’s environment. It’s not just about looking futuristic, though – the light in the balls actually helps the camera track the movements of the controller in three dimensions through its size. Pretty cool, eh?

In terms of motion tracking there are also accelerometers, magnetometers and sensors inside each controller which monitor turning and rotation as well, to keep things incredibly accurate, so that your every minimal shift while playing is recorded on screen.

The set also come with a pair of Navigation Contollers. These sub-controllers are used in certain types of gameplay as a navigational tool – basically they are the directional buttons and triggers on the left half of a regular DualShock controller.
Buttons
The controllers use the same wireless Bluetooth 2.0 connection to the console as the PS3 and PS4 DualShock controllers, allowing for seamless connection. PlayStation Move Motion Controllers are charged via the mini USB port, just like regular controllers.

Wireless Bluetooth
The controllers use the same wireless Bluetooth 2.0 connection to the console as the PS3 and PS4 DualShock controllers, allowing for seamless connection. PlayStation Move Motion Controllers are charged via the mini USB port, just like regular controllers, and last for 7-8 hours of play, which is great.

Gaming Experience
One thing you’ll notice about the controllers is how smooth and lag-free they are. Games-wise Sony are not playing around here with some novelty toys – PlayStation Move Motion Controllers will become something much larger than just gimmick value and become integral parts of their gaming range. Games like Just Dance 2016 obviously work excellently with it, and surprisingly there are titles like Gran Turismo 5 also compatible. But where they will be incredibly relevant going forward, is with Virtual Reality.

VR Connectivity
The Playstation Move Motion Controller Twin Pack is also an incredibly useful buy if you have or are considering buying the Sony PlayStation VR. The controllers transform the VR experience in conjunction with the headset to add an extra dimension as the tracers in your handhelds communicate that part of your experience.

Product Guide
Playstation goes virtual.
In the world of virtual reality gaming, although there are some familiar manufacturers visible most of them are smartphone and technology manufacturers. There is one notable exception, as you are reassured to see Sony PlayStation VR on the market. This headset pitches itself in between the limited smartphone-applicable models and the extremely expensive, top-level models which are designed to work with high-powered gaming computers. This, as well as its household name, makes it one of the most popular choices available on the market, aided by a strong contingent of games to back it up.

Sony PlayStation VR: The Next Step
With the bright white and blue lights running along the top and bottom of it, this headset looks like something straight out of Tron. And let’s be honest, the world needs more things like that in it if we’re ever going to actually start resembling that of Back To The Future. It soon turns out that these are actually made up of nine light points with which it can track your movements.

It requires 6 x 10 ft playing space for you to play in. Because you only have one camera for tracking you movements, similar to the Oculus Rift, you run into the same problem of not being able to move around a lot. This means that you are playing games in one of two ways: on the couch sitting, or standing up and keeping still.

Controls
The headset is designed to work perfectly with a DualShock 4 controller that is regular with your PS4, including having sensors on it for the camera. However, to get the full experience, you’ll have to get Playstation Move controllers, which sit in your hand and wok much better.
VR Gaming
The Playstation VR demo disc that comes with the set has a bunch of games with it for you to dive in. The real advantage that this headset has over its rivals is that Sony have access to so many video games developers, and promised more than 50 titles by the end of 2016 alone. You can be in shark cages, rob banks, battle aliens, but most importantly a lot of the major games that you will want to play are out or are forthcoming for this title, something that its competitors cannot match. For example, following the latest in the series, Batman Arkham Knight gets a VR version, simply titled Batman Arkham VR, where you glide through the streets of Gotham first-hand.

An Affordable Introduction to VR Gaming?
The truly fantastic thing about the Sony PlayStation VR is the first two parts of the name – other VR headsets such as the Oculus Rift require a high-powered gaming computer to run, this just works with your PS4. As such, this makes it a much more potentially popular buy, and be certain that this will encourage the price to come down quicker than that of many of its rivals. If you are fully committing to this headset though, consider buying the PS4 Pro, as its ultrapowerful tech makes a notable difference to your virtual gaming experience.

One of the major downsides is that you’ll have to buy a PS4 camera if you don’t have one already. It always grates slightly when companies do this – you’ve already shelled out some 300-400 pounds for a VR headset to go with your several hundred pound console, and then it won’t work unless you buy another piece of equipment, as well as the Playstation Move controllers to maximise the experience? Thankfully, if you compare online you get a lot of this kit for cheaper – pay particular attention to them appearing in PS4 bundles, such as the Playstation VR Launch Bundle in particular.
